Every year, BuckeyeThon offers grants to our YP Programs. The purpose of the grant is to help YP programs cover the cost of a new activity or initiative they are interested in starting. This activity or initiative can be for anytime in the year, not necessarily for a programs culminating event. In September, the Director of Youth Philanthropy will make an application available for student leaders and the advisor to complete. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until all grant money has been exhausted.

Prior to applying for the grant, a program should get an estimate for the cost of the activity and figure out how much the program can cover through an operating budget, sponsorship, or other means. An activity/initiative that has already received a grant in the past is expected to be supported by sponsorship, or other means, in the future. The grant is meant as an initial catalyst. Programs should consult with their YPC and BT’s Development team to identify other ways of funding an initiative for the future.

The usage of the grant should be for a “gamechanging” idea, and applications with gamechanging ideas will be stronger. Preference will be given to programs that have not received the grant in the past but having received the grant in the past will not entirely disqualify the program.

Grant Usage Ideas

Process for applying and receiving a grant

  1. Grant application will be made available by Director of Youth Philanthropy in September
  2. Students, advisors, and Youth Philanthropy Coordinators will work together on filling out the application, making sure to emphasize the need and the connection to cause, awareness, and/or fundraising
  3. On a rolling basis, the Director of Youth Philanthropy and VP of Strategic Engagement will review applications and set up times with all applicants for a pitch
  4. Students will pitch, in whatever means they believe will be effective, their idea and its impact to the Director of Youth Philanthropy and VP of Strategic Engagement
  5. Using a holistic process involving the application, pitch, program history, and funds available, the Director of Youth Philanthropy and VP of Strategic Engagement will make their decision as to which programs will be allocated funds and how much
  6. The Director of Youth Philanthropy will officially notify via Email the school’s student leaders, advisor, and YPC that was chosen to receive the grant
  7. The advisor of the receiving school will need to meet with the Director of Youth Philanthropy, Vice President of Strategic Engagement, and Vice President of Finance to understand what will need to be done to receive grant money, as soon as possible
